Chorus Auditions

Do you love singing with a choir, have a good voice, and have an ability to learn music quickly? Are you willing to come to rehearsals prepared and to work hard? Are you serious about improving your skills to a professional level? If you answered 'yes' to some or most of these questions, you are an ideal candidate. We want to hear you!  Be sure to bring all your musical family and friends!

Audition Process
We want the audition process to be as easy for you as possible. There will be two options. You can audition from the comfort of your own home or from a location near you. You can either submit a video audition via YouTube and the online audition form or attend a friendly live audition. Candidates will be judged according to the Ensign Chorus vocal ideals

Audition for the chorus will include the following:
  • Sing without accompaniment a hymn or prepared solo
  • Sight singing / tonal memory evaluation (or sing choral excerpt for online audition)
  • Sing simple scales to establish vocal range
Audition as a chorus pianist or organist will include the following:
  • Two solo pieces of contrasting styles and periods (part will be done together with conductor)
  • Sight reading of selected choral music (part will be done together with conductor)

Choral Excerpt (online auditions only)
Poulenc - O magnum mysterium (zip file)

To reserve an audition spot, just fill in the below form.

Vocal Ideals

  1. Able to sing with a clear and beautiful core tone. The sound should be open and resonant and free of breathiness and tension.
  2. Able to sing with accurate intonation and rhythm.
  3. Able to spin the tone evenly.
  4. Able to articulate crisp consonants and tall, open vowels.
  5. Able to change vocal color to match various styles of music (e.g. African American Spiritual, European Boy Choir, traditional Scottish song, etc.)
  6. Able to sing a phrase with musicality and expression
  7. Able to learn music quickly by ear, sight reading, or rote memorization. Ability to do more than one well is not required, but certainly a plus.

  2. May we upload a YouTube video before our audition date and then let you know so we need not come to the audition? The link for a specific piece to sing appears to not be working yet; what should we sing?

    1. Yes, of course. You can simply sign up for an online audition and upload your YouTube video and you won't need to attend an in person audition. Audition excerpt is now posted.
